We've all been there, we muster up the courage to do that adorable bob cut we've been wanting only to find ourselves missing our long hair a week later!  You all know I have long hair myself but it wasn't always this long.  After I had my daughter a few years ago, I decided to cut my hair right above my shoulders which is the shortest my hair has ever been.  At first I was in love with it and how easy it was to style everyday, especially with a new baby to take care of, but I quickly started missing my longer hair. I decided instead of having regular cuts to maintain that length, I wanted to grow my hair back out.  I've learned a thing or two about growing your hair back out over the past few years and wanted to share my tips and tricks with you all.  

If you're wondering how fast hair actually does grow, its said that hair grows on average 0.5 inch per month.  This means you could easily grow your hair out 6 inches in a year.  If you are over styling, lacking in vitamins and accumulating a lot of dead or split ends, it can hinder your ability to grow your hair that long in year.  When growing out your hair it's important to get regular trims every 8-10 weeks.  Regular trims will help minimize unhealthy ends and maintain your hairs integrity.  It's also very important to avoid heat tools, including blow dryers, and hair color or highlights as much as you can.  Anything that can damage your hair is something you want to avoid at all costs or at least minimize as much as you can on a regular basis.  If you color your hair regularly, consider going to shade closer to your natural color so you can go longer between coloring appointments or instead of doing highlights you could also do balayage which can require less maintenance.  

About twice a week I recommend doing an oil mask overnight.  I love massaging castor oil into my scalp and rubbing coconut oil onto my ends and sleeping with the oils in my hair.  Castor Oil helps to promote new hair growth and coconut oil is extremely hydrating making it perfect for the ends of your hair.  Just make sure you have a towel over your pillow when you do this because it can leave oil residue on your pillowcase and time to wash the oils out in the morning!  When it comes to washing your hair, make sure you shampoo only when necessary as shampoo strips your hair of it's natural oils and always make sure to use conditioner in the shower, even if you don't shampoo.  It's important to end your shower with a cold rinse on your hair to help seal your hair cuticles and avoid hair damage as well.  

If you can, try to avoid using a wire or metal hair brush or tight hair elastics that can promote hair damage and contribute to your hair breaking.  Cloth scrunchies and wide tooth combs are better options to use.  If you can, try to take a supplement with biotin and vitamin E to promote hair growth and use a silk pillowcase to sleep on at night too.  Vitamins will help promote healthy hair growth and some vitamins are even targeted just for hair growth these days! Lastly, it's very important to make sure your hair is always hydrated so I use a hydrating hair mask at least once a week on top of my normal conditioner!  If you don't want to purchase a new hair mask for yourself you can always just use the same coconut oil as a hydrating hair mask substitute.
